February funshine: Winter in Gran Canaria

Well this year I hit fabulous 30. Not deterred by the milestone, I sought to make it the sunniest birthday month possible in the midst of a European winter…hence why I headed to (pretty much!) Africa.

No longer content to just go for a nice birthday meal, in recent years my friends have embarked on many an excursion birthday and I’ve been exceedingly lucky to have had multiple involving fantastic groups of people. Rochester Medieval adventure,  Bordeaux Girl’s trip and now…a group adventure to the Canary Islands.

Seven of us packed up for a long weekend of 22 degree weather and Carnivale atmosphere. We managed to avoid, for the most part, any whiff of ‘all inclusive’ holidays and situated ourselves in a nice apartment at Arguineguin. Not not touristy – but definitely quieter and more discerning (we felt) than Playa del Ingles area.

Seven is a pretty big group to organise but we managed to tick off a few of the local sites, including a day trip walking to Anfi:

Some of the BEST seafood I’ve had in, probably forever! At Arguineguin’s Restaurante Cofradia de Pescadores

And a day trip in to the capital, Las Palmas, where we explored the beautiful old town and got involved in the Carnivale…apparently the world’s second biggest outside Brazil!

Now I can’t wait to explore more Canary Islands. Meow
